The Senate was informed today that President Enrique Peña Nieto will attend the 25th Economic Leaders’ Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum on November 10-11 in Da Nang, Vietnam.
APEC is the region’s most important forum for political and economic coordination. It has 21 member economies (Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong China, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, United States and Vietnam), which together account for about 39% of the world’s population, approximately 59% of global GDP and 50% of world trade.
This year’s theme is “Creating New Dynamism, Fostering a Shared Future.” Mexico’s president and the other APEC leaders will discuss deepening regional economic integration; promoting sustainable, innovative and inclusive growth; strengthening SMEs’ competitiveness and innovation in the digital age and enhancing food security and sustainable agriculture in response to climate change. The leaders of the 21 APEC economies will adopt the Da Nang Declaration at the end of the meeting, which will include the main agreements and commitments discussed during the meetings.
President Peña Nieto will also attend the meeting of the Trans-Pacific Partnership treaty leaders (TPP-11); the Leaders’ Dialogue with the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC); and a meeting between the leaders of APEC and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting is an unparalleled platform from which to strengthen Mexico’s political dialogue and consolidate its role in the Asia-Pacific region. About 84% of Mexico’s foreign trade is with APEC members. Seven of Mexico’s top 10 trading partners and three of its 10 largest investors belong to APEC.
The official delegation accompanying the president includes Foreign Secretary Luis Videgaray; Economy Secretary Ildefonso Guajardo; the Presidential Chief of Staff, Major General Roberto Miranda Moreno; the Social Communication Coordinator of the Presidency, Eduardo Sánchez Hernández; Undersecretary of Foreign Trade Juan Carlos Baker Pineda; the President’s Chief of Staff, Carlos Perez Verdía; and the Executive Director of the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID), Agustín García-López Loaeza.
